WEST COAST
....Neptune's playground

Brillantly contrasted against an azure sea and golden beaches, the petals of field upon field of vivid pink, white, yelow, blue and orange spring wildflowers seem to dance in the playful breeze. In summer, the entire lagoon becomes a bustling meeting-place as it pulsates with the wings and the criesof thouands of migratory birds, some from as far afield as Greenland and Siberia. Dipping into the wetlands of the Langebaan lagoon, up to 60 000 waterbirds and waders feed on tiny invertebrates that live in the mud. Large populations of birds such as penguins, cormorants, and gannets roost and breed in the shelter of the offshore islands while boldly-couloured flamingoes find a temporary home on the salt marshes. The 30 000-ha West Coast National Park, with its temperate coastel climate and wetlands; dry summers and winds, is ideally suited to birdlife. Eland, caracal, the African wild cat and the bat-eared fox are some of the species that share the idyllic Postberg section of the park, which is only open during the spring flowering season.
