Here a charming world of lakes, rivers, estuaries and beaches gently unfolds against a backdrop of a lush forest and lofty mountais. Nature trails winding through the densely wooded forest and along the tranquil Touw River, affords geusts the opportunity to encounter the brilliantly coloured Knysna lourie or one of the five kingfisher species that occur here. During spring, a carpet of flowers surrounds the lakes, further enhancing the verdant beauty of this wetland national park. The unique ecosystem in the Wilderness National Park has been awarded RAMSAR status.
Accommodation and Activities
The Park has two restcamps with accommodation ranging from forest cabins to log cabins and family cottages. The park also has caravan and camping sites on the banks of the Touw River and a shop, which sells basic commodities. Bathing, rowing and fishing are permitted at Wilderness beach, the Touw River and some of the lakes. Canoes can be hired in the park. Apart from taking excursions along the network of narture trails, bird lovers can also visit the bird hides at Langvlei and Rondevlei.
How to get there
The Wilderness National Park is situated close to the N1 Highway, 15 km from George, 315 km from Port Elizabeth and 415 km from Cape Town. The closest airport is located at George, where car rental facilities are available.
